A Study on the Bone Graft

Abstract
Experimental studies on bone grafts and its clinical applications have been described in enormous number of papers since early 190(1. The bone grafts have been widely applied in orthopedic surgery, mostly for the purposes to get better bony union in the fractures or diseases or to fill up the bony defect.
Surgical procedures of bone graft were carried out on 152 patients at Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Seoul National University Hospital, from Jan. 1968 to Dec. 1973 and the results were observed as follows.
1. Among 152 cases of bone grafts, 108 cases were performed on the spines and 44 cases on the extremities. Common underlying diseases for bone grafts were 82 cases of tuberculosis of spine and 18 cases of non-union in long bones.
2. Strut bone grafts which were taken from ilium or rib were used in 80 cases of anterior fusion of spine. Breakages of grafted bone were observed in 1 case among 75 iliac grafts and 2 cases among 7 rib grafts.
3. Good results were obtained, except infected one case, with match stick-typed grafts for the treatment of fresh and old fractures.
4. Freezed bank bones were used in 4 cases, 1 autogenous and 3 homogenous, with one failure in the case of congenital pseudoarthrosis" of tibia.
5. It is believed that the rigid internal fixation and sufficient period of external immobilization area ma~idatory in order to get solid bony union.
